THE MAJORITY OF CHRISTMAS TREE GROWERS
START WITH SEEDLINGS THAT ARE 2 OR 3 YEARS OLD AND BETWEEN 8 AND 16 INCHES TALL.   THESE ARE PLANTED IN THE SPRING WITH MUCH CARE.   FOR THE FIRST COUPLE OF YEARS THE TREES ARE SIMPLY CARED FOR BY KEEPING THE GRASS AND WEEDS MOWED FROM AROUND THEM.   SOMETIMES DURING VERY DRY SPELLS THEY ARE WATERED.   AFTER THE TREE HAS BEEN PLANTED 2 OR 3 YEARS IT STARTS GETTING "SHEARED" (TRIMMED) EVERY SUMMER (SO IT WILL LOOK LIKE A CHRISTMAS TREE) TO GIVE IT THE CHRISTMAS TREE LOOK INSTEAD OF LOOKING LIKE A LANDSCAPE TREE.

WHEN THE TREE IS 6 TO 7 YEARS OLD IT IS USUALLY BIG ENOUGH TO CUT AS A CHRISTMAS TREE. HOWEVER THIS DEPENDS ON THE SIZE OF TREE AND THE SPECIES.  SOME TREES GROW MUCH FASTER THAN OTHERS, FOR EXAMPLE WHITE PINE AND SCOTCH PINE ARE USUALLY READY IN 7 YEARS.

ONCE THE TREE IS OF MARKETABLE SIZE, ONE THEN MUST DECIDE IF THE TREE IS TO BE CUT OR USE IT AS A LIVE TREE, TO BE REPLANTED AFTER CHRISTMAS.  IF INTENDED FOR PLANTING, THE TREE MUST BE HARVESTED AFTER IT GOES "DORMANT" FOR THE WINTER. THIS HAPPENS AFTER
THE FIRST FROST.  THE TREE CAN THEN BE REPLANTED ANYTIME THERE AFTER. HOWEVER, IT IS BEST TO REPLANT BEFORE LATE SPRING.  ONCE THE TREE IS REPLANTED BE SURE TO WATER
IT AT LEAST 5 GAL. PER WEEK THE FIRST YEAR. FOLLOWING THESE SUGGESTIONS SHOULD ENSURE A PLEASANT ADDITION TO YOUR PROPERTY.
